Shippingport: the worlds first atomic power station.
The original Shippingport Atomic Power Station located in Shippingport, Beaver County Pennsylvania was the first large-scale, central-station nuclear power plant in the United States and the first plant of such size in the world operated solely to produce electric power.
This program was started in 1953 to confirm the practical application of nuclear power for large-scale electric power generation.
It has provided much of the technology being used for design and operation of the commercial, central-station nuclear power plants now in use..

The reactor reached criticality on December 2, 1957, and remained in operation until October 1982.
The first electrical power was produced on December 18, 1957 as engineers synchronized the plant with the distribution grid of Duquesne Light Company.

The history of the glass and steel industry in Beaver County is the catalyst and focus for this new museum at 801 Plumb Street, Darlington, Pennsylvania.
The Beaver County Industrial Museum, previously located on the campus of Geneva College, has an extensive collection of documents, photographs, slides, movies, videos, and artifacts from various periods in the history of the steel industry.
Originally established to provide opportunities for research for students and scholars, and to provide exhibitions for the public, especially local school districts, service organizations and industrial and labor organizations, the Museum’s new location, with more area for display and curatorial work, will allow the mission of the Museum to expand.
This museum is dedicated to the preservation of glass and steel in one location as steel was the largest employer in the twentieth century and glass the largest employer in the nineteenth century in Beaver County.
For example, in 1980, 61% of the work force in Beaver County worked in a steel mill.
Today there is but a handful of steelworkers left in Beaver County.
