Nel 1910 l'istituzione raggiunse il rango di Hochschule (istituzione educativa di livello universitario) e ottenne il suo attuale nome nell'anno 1996.
Attualmente l'Università Bauhaus conta circa 4000 studenti.Insieme all'Università di Erfurt, alla Friedrich-Schiller-Universität di Jena e alla Technische Universität di Ilmenau, l'Università Bauhaus è una delle quattro università del Bundesland Turingia.
