Author Rudyard Kipling lived in Bateman's from 1902 to his death in 1936.
His wife bequeathed the house to the National Trust on her death in 1939, and it has since been opened to the public.HouseBateman's is a modest Jacobean Wealden sandstone mansion built in about 1634 probably for William Langham.
It has been alleged that a later occupier, John Britten, was an ironmaster but there is no evidence to support this.
