Le 16 décembre 1944, les Allemands lancent leur dernière offensive majeure à l’ouest.
Bastogne est sur leur route et constitue un objectif majeur car la ville est un important nœud routier.
Le Haut Commandement Allié décide d’envoyer la 101st Airborne Division pour défendre la ville.La nuit du 18 au 19 décembre 1944, la division aéroportée commandée par la Général Mc Auliffe arrive à Bastogne et installe son Quartier Général dans la caserne Sous-Lieutenant Heinz.
Ce lieu va devenir mondialement connu suite au « Nuts » prononcé par le Général Mc Auliffe le 22 décembre 1944 suite à la demande de reddition des Allemands qui encerclent et bombardent la ville..

Depuis le 1er octobre 2010, la caserne est devenue un Centre d’Interprétation de la 2e Guerre Mondiale.
Un détachement du Musée Royal de l’Armée y présente des expositions et des reconstitutions sur le thème de la Bataille des Ardennes et y assure la restauration et la conservation des véhicules et engins du patrimoine du Musée Royal de l’Armée..
