Detailed description is Le barrage du Chevril, également appelé barrage de Tignes, est un barrage hydroélectrique français, situé dans la haute vallée de l'Isère ou vallée de la Tarentaise, dans le département de la Savoie.Le barrage est installé sur le cours de l'Isère, en contrebas de la station de sport d'hiver de Tignes, dont il constitue la seule route d'accès.Fierté française d'après guerre, mais ayant entraîné en 1952 la douloureuse expulsion des habitants du village originel de Tignes, sa destruction puis son engloutissement, le barrage a été conçu par l'ingénieur André Coyne.
Il était le plus haut barrage voûte d'Europe au moment de sa construction (il reste aujourd'hui le plus haut de France).
Son tablier est recouvert d'une fresque (qui a été la plus grande du monde) de Jean-Marie Pierret de peinte à la fin des années 1980, représentant Hercule et qui s'efface progressivement.HistoireEnvisagée dès 1930, au terme de l'intense spéculation boursière des années 1920 sur l'hydroélectricité, la construction du barrage commence en 1941 dans la cuvette du Chevril qui se prête particulièrement bien à la construction d'un « grand barrage ».Après-guerre, les besoins en énergie sont énormes.Très vite, les 387 habitants menacés d'expulsion tentent d'empêcher le déroulement des travaux en raison d'un manque d'information sur leur avenir ou d'un manque de clarté quant au rachat de leur maison et de leurs terrains.
