Detailed description is Backwater Kennels focuses on breeding, training, and promoting hard drive Labrador retrievers Todd Schmadl owner/trainer of Backwater Kennels has been involved in training and hunting dogs his entire life.
Born in Wisconsin, Todd hunted pheasants, ducks, and deer every free moment.
Throughout high school Todd hunted "Barney" a German Shorthaired pointer which produced the birds on point but retrieving to hand was another story.
Thus his quest to train to another level began.

Todd bought a very well bred labrador "Thor" and through much work trained "Thor" to complete with style long and difficult blind retrieves.
This is where the his desire for perfection lead Todd to learn more and more about retrievers and training..
Soon Todd found himself "bit" by the bear hunting bug and some of the nations finest Plott hounds were running the deep woods of Wisconsin putting bears into trees.
This lasted almost twenty years and that burning desire for the labrador had not disappeared, thus Backwater Kennels was born..
Todd looked for the finest field trial bred labradors in the nation.
The first dog was "Bandit" a black male out of a Field Champion.
Todd trained this dog for two years and during this time "Raven" also came on board at Backwater Kennels.
Raven was directly out of NFC AFC Hunter's Run Boo Boo and a bitch named AFC Beat the Rush.
Both of these dogs go directly back to FC AFC Nick of Time Long Ranger.
Raven was something special right from the start..
By 9 months old Raven was doing blind retrieves with style.
By 11 months old Raven was a "finished gun dog" in any man's kennel but Todd wanted more..
Todd soon met Brian Stricter and the two trained almost daily for two years.
Brian is a very good professional trainer and guide whom Todd acquired much knowledge..
Today Raven has earned her HRCH title is running in the master and qualifying stakes.
She is a top waterfowl and upland game dog.
Todd realized what a special dog he had in Raven and the type of dog FC AFC Nick of Time Long Ranger produces.
They are high drive, athletic, retrieving machines with no quit in them, ever.
