Detailed description is Live music presented in a relaxed tiki atmosphere, ranging from roots to rockabilly and Americana, with an occasional stop at rock'n roll or Western swing.
What is B&B’s Musical Thrills? We’re glad you asked..
.
by Jim Washburn.
.
Coastal Orange County has been a beacon for live music since the 1930s, when the Balboa Peninsula’s Rendezvous Ballroom drew thousands of southland feet to its wooden dance floor, moving to the top big bands of the day.
Three decades later, the Rendezvous and Huntington Beach’s Pavalon Ballroom rumbled to the sounds of OC’s homegrown surf music stars.
.
A slew of coastal venues chimed in during the 1960s’ rock and folk era: the Marina Palace, the Rouge et Noir, the Prison of Socrates among others, and most notably Huntington Beach’s Golden Bear.
In 1963, the Bear began a 22-year run as a locally beloved and nationally esteemed music club.
Its stage welcomed the Byrds, Peter Gabriel, Patti Smith and hundreds of other names, while it was an incubator for Jackson Browne and other then-unknown artists.
.
One thing all these venues have in common is that they are long, long gone.
The Bear sighed its final note in 1985.
The last of the mavericks, the daring Safari Sam’s, was shuttered in 1986, and for three decades the region had plenty of nothing to listen to..
So let’s get to the good news, shall we?.
For the past three years, the OC coastal scene has been revivified by one walloping show after another created by B&B’s Musical Thrills, presented at Don the Beachcomber in Huntington Beach.
.
That’s the tiki-bar, Polynesian-palace-with-lava-waterfalls, take-your-date-on-a-get-lucky-night Don the Beachcomber.
It’s on the PCH, a block from the surf at Sunset Beach.
Opened in 1960, and originally called Sam’s Seafood, Don’s is a Southern California institution, with its immersive tiki décor and fine food..
Who could ask for more? .
Well, Christopher Burkhardt and Ed Boswell did.
They’re the B and B of B&B’s Musical Thrills, a name they work hard to live up to.
The two were knocked out by the tiki venue’s potential when they helped stage a benefit there in 2011, the Hula Hayride to aid the Huntington Beach High School Orchestra.
.
“We fell in love with the place,” says Burkhardt.
“Along with the atmosphere, comfortable seating and great food, we could tell right away that it was one of those special rooms where the audience really connects with the music.”.
Boswell says, “Christopher and I had been talking for years about putting on shows somewhere, and the Beachcomber was a perfect fit.
A great dinner menu, tropical drinks and three venues for live music in one classic tiki palace.” .
Boswell has been a mover in the LA music and arts scenes for decades, while Burkhardt has helped promote everything from music fests to rodeos, as well as publishing music and country lifestyle magazines.
Along with liking the same music, the two realized that if they wanted to hear more of it, they’d have to start presenting it themselves..
“For my part, the urge to do this came from wanting to take my wife to hear great music and dance to it - without having to drive to some dive bar in LA or Riverside to see an artist,” Burkhardt says.
.
Another impetus both share is that, as fans of most of the artists they book, “one of our goals is to put money in the artists’ pockets.
We’re proud we’re not some faceless corporate entity that’s only concerned with the bottom line.
We’re happy to be presenting great music that great people can have a great with,” Burkhardt says, to which Boswell adds, “and if at the end of the night we’ve put some money in the pockets of our heroes and we walk home with enough money to keep the ball rolling, that’s really all we want to do.” .
So far, they’ve been on quite a roll, presenting over 140 shows since 2013, and not just any shows.
Consider the recent pairing of country singer/songwriter Jim Lauderdale and Broadway star Edward Clendening (who played Elvis Presley in Million Dollar Quartet), which is almost certainly the first time a Grammy winner and Tony winner have shared the stage in a tiki lounge.
.
Several other of B&B’s acts are bedecked in plaudits, including Los Lobo’s David Hidalgo and Louie Perez (multiple Grammys), Suzy Bogguss (a platinum album, CMI “Hat” awards and a Grammy nomination) and country outlaw supreme Billy Joe Shaver (Grammy nominations and an Americana Lifetime Achievement Award).
10-time Grammy winner Asleep at the Wheel performed there in early September..
More than that, Boswell and Burkhardt have a knack for booking musician’s musicians—such as Albert Lee, David Lindley and Los Straitjackets—and songwriter’s songwriters, including the aforementioned artists, as well as Joe Ely, Alejandro Escovedo, John Doe and Jonathan Richman, who may not be a household name, but he is in the households of Neil Young and Bob Dylan..
B&B has provided a great home for fans to see local stalwarts like Big Sandy and James Intveld, second-wave rockabilly heroes the Paladins, Rockin’ Rebels, Jimmy and the Mustangs and others, and up and comers like England’s soul sensation Si Cranstoun, Australia’s C.W.
Stoneking and Oklahoma’s Parker Millsap.
“We try to catch them a year or two before we can’t afford them,” Boswell quips..
Burkhardt notes, “There’s no boundary on the music we’ll present, though we prefer staying in the roots world, which encompasses rockabilly, western swing, honky tonk, folk, R&B and outlaw music.”.
The roots world has taken note, and B&B Musical Thrills’ bookings earned Don the Beachcomber a 2016 Venue of the Year nomination from the Ameripolitan Awards, nearly unknown for such a new enterprise..
The two feel a certain responsibility to live up to the previous music venues of OC.
Boswell says, “We’re not a rockabilly club.
We’re not a country club, or a folk, blues or singer/songwriter club.
We’re all those.
Our bookings are all over the place, not unlike the Golden Bear’s were.
If we can come to be seen as the Bear’s “cub,” as such, we’d take that as an honor.
That’s what we aspire to, to bring in the best of roots music.” .
.
.
Another take:.
.
Ed Boswell & Christopher Burkhardt have a long history of bringing interesting and original entertainment to the spotlight.
It wasn't until they discovered the tiki oasis known as Don The Beachcomber that they saw a different kind of light.
.
Don's, with its three separate tiki-decorated concert rooms, offers a variety of opportunities to showcase artists ranging from small to large.
While not limited to this beautiful Polynesian space as a concert venue, the pair have made it a point to build its reputation for quality, niche entertainment that always lights up the room.
Now they are operating as B&B's Musical Thrills, and they hope you share their passion for great music at affordable prices in Southern California.
