. instagram account : ayb_egypt . . . Background. . . . Alashanek ya Balady Association for Sustainable Development (AYB), registration number 6135/05), is an Egyptian NGO run primarily by youth, first established as a student club at the American University in Cairo in 2oo2, then registered officially as an NGO in 2005. Founded by a group of young Egyptians who believed in the power of social and economic development, AYB works on solving the problem of unemployment and on the alleviation of poverty all over Egypt. AYB’s main target groups are the underprivileged, who constitute more than 44% of the Egyptian population. This segment of society had long been radically marginalized and impoverished, and AYB’s mandate is to empower them economically and socially. From its inception, AYB has distinguished itself through its commitment to promoting the rights of marginalized communities and challenging traditional taboos and models. . . . . Problem Definition. . . . Statistics and research show that the unemployment rate in Egypt in 2010 was 10%, and has risen recently to 12%. Although this is an alarming figure in itself, not all segments of the labor force share the same problems in finding jobs. As the below diagram shows, for example, the segment of the labor force with below intermediate education (primary or preparatory level), 16% of the labor force, represent 8% of Egypt’s unemployed, however the market demand for them is quite high (66%). The problem in this case is that there may not be a match between their skills and the market needs. On the other hand, in the segment with intermediate education (high school and vocational diplomas), 24% of the labor force, represent a whopping 55% of the unemployed and yet the market demand for them does not exceed 4%. This presents a different kind of problem, since they represent a large percentage of the unemployed and the demand is very low, this means that their skills are not wanted by the market, which leads to the necessity of exploring other alternatives. In addition, in terms of those with an above intermediate and university levels of education (institutes, 2 and 4-year colleges), representing 18% of the unemployed, we find that there is a close match between their percentages of unemployment and market demand (25% and 30% respectively), which also indicates a mismatch in skills versus market needs. (Capmas 2010).. . . . In light of this information, AYB’s focuses primarily on the unemployed with an intermediate level of education, due to their extremely large share of unemployment in Egypt faced with low market demand. In addition, a special focus is put on those with above intermediate and university levels of education, mainly whom have graduated with a degree that is not in demand in the labor market, or exceeding the market capacity. An explanation of our development model shows how the above mentioned cases can sustainably rise above the poverty line through training and employment.. . . . Model Breakdown. . . . In order to find and secure decent employment for the underprivileged to guarantee a dignified and sustainable living out of poverty, AYB has gone through an intricate and careful process which defines our development model and approach. As shown below in the diagram, we have begun with a thorough market analysis and needs assessment of youth, through which we arrived at the gap analysis between the market requirements and youth qualifications. We then selected the industries with the highest market demand relative to our target group, which are namely; mechanics, carpentry, sales and services, leather, and textiles. The next step is to design tailored employability services, encompassing career guidance and coaching, specialized training curricula, and follow up, and begin marketing for beneficiaries in need of job opportunities or eager to start small businesses. Beneficiaries then register and are called for interviews and fill out applications.. . . . Once they are processed, the undergo training and are provided with coaching. The types of trainings they generally receive are; specialized/technical, (sales, administrative work,…etc.), life skills (communication, leadership, business ethics, CV writing and interview skills…etc.), and vocational training (leather making, carpentry, sewing…etc.). Coaching involves mentoring and career guidance. After the training and coaching process is complete, our beneficiaries become ready to be employed. Our model encompasses two types of employment; job opportunities in factories, companies, or workshops, and small businesses.. . . . Job opportunities involve life skills trainings and specialized/technical/vocational trainings, where the beneficiary becomes ready to be employed in a company or a factory. In this case, AYB negotiates suitable job opportunities with fair wages and treatment with specific factories and companies, and goes through a job matching process in order to properly match the beneficiary with the appropriate job. The coaching and labor rights follow up continue in the post employment phase.. . In terms of small businesses, beneficiaries are given a small or micro loan with minimal service fees, ranging from 500-10,000 EGP, to establish their own small businesses. Beneficiaries receive vocational training as well as training on feasibility study and project management, and as soon as their feasibility studies are approved they receive the loan and get started. Projects include, but are not exclusive to, grocery, clothing shops, hairdressers, carpet making, mobile maintenance, and pottery making. The coaching and technical assistance continue afterwards.. . In order to evaluate the situation of our beneficiaries in terms of graduation from poverty, a regular impact assessment is conducted to monitor the performance of our development model. (See diagram below). . . . .
