Avis Comunale Livorno è un’associazione ONLUS, senza fini di lucro e iscritta nel Registro Regionale del volontariato, costituita tra coloro che donano il proprio sangue in modo volontario, gratuito, anonimo, periodico e responsabile.
Parte di una più vasta organizzazione che a livello nazionale si articola in Avis Nazionale (riconosciuta con la Legge n° 49 del 20 Febbraio 1950) e, a livello regionale, nell’Avis Regionale Toscana, concorre in modo significativo al raggiungimento dell’autosufficienza trasfusionale in ambito locale, regionale e nazionale, mediante un’opera di costante sensibilizzazione e informazione dei cittadini circa le tematiche inerenti la donazione, il sangue e gli emoderivati..

Per conseguire un risultato di tale importanza per la salvaguardia della salute pubblica, provvede inoltre all’organizzazione e alla gestione sul territorio dei donatori volontari associati.
Attiva a Livorno da oltre 57 anni, è stata fondata nel 1955 su iniziativa di alcuni gruppi di donatori organizzati all’interno di varie fabbriche e aziende cittadine.
Da allora ha sempre saputo adattarsi ai mutamenti della società, rimodulando di volta in volta le proprie modalità operative e la propria struttura organizzativa a seconda delle necessità contingenti.
Oggi, con oltre 6810 soci e 10.000 donazioni annue è una delle sezioni più efficienti a livello nazionale e rappresenta la maggior fonte di aprovvigionamento per il fabbisogno di sangue della nostra città.
