Detailed description is 國家運動訓練中心在1976年草創時期，名為「左營訓練中心」。經過幾次組織變革，於2015年1月1日，改制為「行政法人國家運動訓練中心」，肩負國家運動員的培訓重任。 1975年4月我國為組訓參加1976年蒙特婁奧林匹克運動會，由當時中華體育協進會理事長黎玉璽將軍向軍方借得左營勝利營區，供作選手訓練基地，由於幅原廣闊、氣候適宜，且各項運動場地集中，經徵得軍方同意繼續使用，遂於1976年11月正式成立「左營訓練中心」，1992年再由教育部與國防部以契約方式繼續借用，並由中華民國體育運動總會代管。.

1997年7月，行政院體育委員會成立，左營訓練中心仍委由中華體總代管，惟其業務輔導改由體委會辦理， 2000年雪黎奧運結束後，為落實「選、訓、賽、輔」業務整合政策，並積極準備2001年東亞運等重要國際賽會，遂於2001年1月由體委會接管左營訓練中心，並更名為「國家運動選手訓練中心」擔負培育國家優秀運動選手重任。.

2013年1月1日因政府組織改造，體委會併入教育部為體育署，國家運動選手訓練中心由體育署管理。 2015年1月1日為強化台灣競技運動人才的培育，國家運動訓練中心正式改制為行政法人，繼續培育優秀運動選手，提昇國家競技運動實力、成績。
