As You Wish Restorations

83 Hot Rock Hollow Rd

Lincoln,

Tennessee,United-states - 37334

Detailed description is I have over 20 years experience as an independent painting contractor and remodeler in residential and commercial settings.
I have worked as a painter for over twenty years, achieving journeyman status in 1997 and graduating to master painter status by 2002.
I also have many years of experience as a building maintenance technician and sheetrock repair, plumbing repair, cabinetry, and carpentry.
I know the guts and bones of houses and buildings and how they are all tied together to create comfort, security, and beauty..
.
As You Wish Restorations brings together these skills in one package.
I can refinish, repaint, and restore houses, doors, windows, and even wooden furniture.
I refinish decks.
I paint new construction and old, paint inside and outside, do staining projects like a factory finish, and take great care to protect my clients' property.
While I mostly work alone, I can manage a crew, manage vendors and contracting services (I research them for quality not just price) for overall project management, and am willing to do light construction as a remodeler.
.
.
I am honest and dependable and come with good references.
I am reasonable in regards to my payment terms and in dealing with vendors and contractors.
I research products until I find the one most suited to a project or present choices by which homeowners can choose the products they want in their homes.
I perform these services for businesses as well, including property management for realtors, assessing properties, making detailed reports of problems that need to be addressed, and while some projects may need the qualified skills of technicians in heat and air, whole house plumbing, or roofing, to name a few, I can implement small changes necessary to bring a building back up to code.
I offer free, detailed estimates and write up detailed contracts spelling out exactly what I'll do for my fees.
And I always try to do exactly what my clients wish.
I do not like sloppy, incomplete, or what is termed blow-n-go work.
.
.
That's it in a nutshell, but for those that have time and want to know the basis for my qualifications, please read further..
.
I started in construction after working as a laborer for my father with his company in Huntsville, Alabama and then by entering a Chattanooga Technical College CETA program designed to introduce women into the construction trades back in the early 1980's.
I learned the rudiments involved in plumbing, ironwork, electrical, carpentry, and painting and chose painting as my way of bringing a little order to the world.
.
.
When the program ended, I received a maintenance storeroom, ordering/expediting, pickup/delivery position with the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga which gave me experience in how to deal with vendors and clients, manage overhead, as well as hands on experience in building maintenance.
I worked there for three years and then decided to move to my land in Hot Rock, Tennessee just outside of Fayetteville..
.
I painted houses, stripped tobacco, was an electrician helper, and worked as an aerobics instructor to support myself while I lived in the old farmhouse for about a year--some of you may remember when it had no electricity or running water.
I owned a four-wheel drive Kubota tractor with a front end loader, backhoe, bushhog, tiller, and 3 augers and with the aid of a transom put in water and sewer lines.
I built fences, bushhogged, and turned (bogged) pastures for my horses.
.
.
After that first year, I then entered an apprenticeship program as a building maintenance technician with Lee Jeans Company in Fayetteville, TN--the first woman to do so in their history.
After 2 years, I completed the apprenticeship, working on presses, motors, pumps, conveyors, strapping machines, and lighting, and worked for another year with Lee Jeans as a maintenance technician before they lost their distribution center and later down-sized their manufacturing, resulting in a layoff for me.
Later that year, the plant shut down entirely..
.
Without prospects in the area to get painting jobs because a woman painter was still an oddity, I moved to eastern Tennessee and became the "roust-about" worker at a marina, taking a boat back and forth to work from my house on the Tennessee River.
I cut trees, repaired (yuk) sewer lines, built floating docks, maintained 6 chalet rentals, ran the floating concessions and gas station, and did small engine repair on our fleet of fishing boats.
Unfortunately, my boss lost his marina, biting off more than he could manage or pay for, and I lost that wonderful job..
.
So, after working in a very scary furniture manufacturing business where safety came second and dismembered fingers were commonplace, Hot Rock called to me once more.
I moved back and found work in a cabinet shop in Gurley, AL for three years, completing an apprenticeship there, specializing in cabinet finishing.
A painting position with a big construction firm opened up for me in Huntsville, and I grabbed it and had only been there for six months of painting on a historic home before their cabinet shop snagged me to do restoration work for that house and some of the old houses in Huntsville as well as the Jewish Synagogue downtown.
Soon my foreman broke off and opened a cabinet shop where I continued learning the skills involved in cabinet finishing and refinishing..
.
With a growing desire to own my own business to ensure that jobs were done right, I struck out on my own again.
I had a moderate success owning and operating my own painting business, but subcontracted more often than contracted, succeeding in having clients request me by name for my skills and for my dependable nature..
.
An opportunity came along, and I traveled to Atlanta and together with Taylor Hoch, a gifted carpenter, opened a business called Brush and Hammer.
We brought home property values up with our combined skills.
One such house went from a value of $78,000 to $145,000 three months later.
From there, we traveled to Colorado where I received a position with a huge construction firm as a lead painter on an 8000 square foot house.
My main duty, other than providing daily leadership over 2-4 painters, was to fix other painters mistakes.
I may not be perfect, and I may make mistakes, but I do strive to do the job right the first time!.
.
Prospects shifted once again, and we moved to the Bay Area of California where we started a business called Inside Out Painting.
As the qualifying partner, I had to pass contractor exams regarding not only painting and interior design but contractor law as well.
We operated that business together for almost five years, remodeling and painting, doing plumbing, carpentry, trim work, landscaping, just about everything except electrical work, before Taylor became disabled.
For another two years, I continued to run this business successfully by myself, doing some light construction and plumbing when my clients requested it, but mainly painting and restoration work--the work I love best.
.
.
For example: I repainted the historic house of Ken Kesey--a man immortalized by Tom Wolfe in The Electric Kool-aid Acid Test, published in 1968--and the trim of all 999 panes of glass covered in at least a dozen coats of paint, latex and oils, had to be stripped with a heat gun and sanded to find and maintain their detail.
It was a pain but worth it.
.
.
In the beginning of 2008, I foresaw the construction bubble burst that happened in the Bay Area, and before it hit hard, we moved back to Hot Rock--I know, it just keeps calling me home--and I worked as an independent contractor with a painter in Huntsville, mainly at Ledges and in the Jones Valley area.
But again, finding painting work on a local level was very difficult on my own--unfortunately that "what's a woman doing in construction?" thing reared its ugly head again (yes, even in the 21st century).
.
.
I dabbled in other things, only painting on the side when I could find the work.
I trained as a CNA and worked in a nursing home and did hospice work.
I also worked in call centers for a time, though that left much to be desired.
So I decided to put all my experience in construction to work for me and got positions at Lowe's and then Home Depot, but those companies were big on hiring only on a part-time basis.
With all the shortcomings that go along with that, I sought and got a position at Marvins Building Materials as Lewisburg's commercial salesperson.
I loved it but not as much as I love painting and making things shine in the eyes of the beholder..
.
So when a friend of mine bought an antebellum home in Petersburg, Tennessee, I became her project manager for nearly a year.
I installed trap doors to access areas that had not seen the light of day since the house was built in 1858 so that I could address foundation problems.
I did mold remediation and restoration work.
I did demolition work on an addition that was falling away from the original structure and performed hands-on building while directing a crew to help in its reconstruction.
I did plaster repair and painting.
As a project manager, I researched materials best suited for the house and found qualified contractors to roof the house, install heating units and gas lines, and to fix electrical issues.
I was there to oversee the work and dealt with the headaches associated with a house that hadn't had any TLC in decades.
I protected my friend's interests and gave her piece of mind..
.
When that position ended, I opened As You Wish Restorations.
I love this kind of work.
It is very satisfying to see something used and abused become beautiful and serviceable due to my skills, knowledge, and can-do spirit.
It is also very satisfying to see that smile on my clients' faces and know that they will refer me to their family and friends for more work..
