Ícone da extensão da UFMG, o Ars Nova - Coral da UFMG, fundado em 1959, representou a Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais em inúmeros eventos e conquistou reconhecimento nacional e internacional, recebendo várias premiações, distinções e menções honrosas em festivais e concursos internacionais.
O Ars Nova, unanimemente aclamado no cenário musical brasileiro, teve como seu primeiro regente o Maestro Sérgio Magnani, que deu vida, segurança e nível artístico ao trabalho inicial.
A partir de 1963, esteve, durante 41 anos, sob a regência do renomado maestro Carlos Alberto Pinto Fonseca e realizou cerca de 20 excursões em vários países da Europa, Ásia e América.
O trabalho realizado por Carlos Alberto Pinto Fonseca junto ao Ars Nova foi referência inquestionável de qualidade coral, influenciando inúmeros agrupamentos e regentes corais, desempenhando papel fundamental na formação de várias gerações de cantores profissionais.
Em 1964 o grupo foi incorporado à UFMG, a convite do Reitor Aluísio.
Pimenta, e vinculado à Pró-Reitoria de Extensão, passando a denominar-se Ars Nova – Coral da UFMG.
Após a aposentadoria do maestro Carlos Alberto Pinto da Fonseca, seu maestro assistente, Rafael Grimaldi, assumiu, em 2004, a direção musical do grupo, o que interrompeu-se tragicamente com seu inesperado falecimento em 2008.
Naquele momento o coro foi transferido para a Escola de Música da UFMG e o maestro Willsterman Sottani, ex-aluno da Escola de Música da UFMG, esteve, por dois anos, frente ao grupo.
O Grupo retomou suas atividades após 2 anos de pausa, em março de 2013, sob a regência da Maestrina Iara Fricke Matte, professora da Escola de Música da UFMG.
Atualmente o grupo é regido pelo Maestro Lincoln Andrade e conta na sua estrutura com um regente, uma regente assistente, um pianista correpetidor, vinte e dois cantores, um administrador institucional, um produtor e três alunos bolsistas.
