Detailed description is BRINGING DEAD WOOD BACK TO LIFE:.
Ant Martin is a disabled artist who is just hitting his stride with his fantastic Australian Hardwood sculptures.
Anthony (Ant) Martin was born a city boy.
Born in Adelaide & probably an undiagnosed ADHD child - (which has become a wonderful trait for him to have now that he has discovered his latent artistic talents).
He left school at 15 after obtaining an apprentiship in a cabinet making workshop.
Eight days in & he cut his hand in half.
Many, many operations later Ant travelled until he was 19 when he returned to Adelaide to begin an earthmoving business..
At 23 Ant suffered another horrific accident when the hydrolic brake line on his truck snapped and whipped back to hit him across the head, lucky escape #2..
After 13 years in the earthmoving busines Ant migrated to the SE of SA - Mt Gambier, where he continued driving trucks.
In 2004 Ant was once again in the wrong place at the wrong time.
While unloading woodchip at the Portland docks his heel became squashed under a 20 tonne ramp causing lots of damage to his foot.
After a year of recovery time he was returned to hospital to have the squashed nerves in his foot removed from scar tissue & was told he would be 'non-bearing' (off his feet) for 3 days.
Nine weeks later he was still flat on his back after contracting the Golden Staph.
bug while in hospital & the operation had not worked - more squashed nerves in more scar tissue was the result..
When Ant finally returned to Mt Gambier an elderly wood-turner took him under his wing to try & take his mind off his physical problems.
He was sat down at a lathe &, incredibly, produced a bowl & pen like he'd been at it all his life.
Once these pieces where produced Ant announced "If I can do this, then anyone can, boring...not interested".
He was then given a block of redgum & told to draw a picture on it & see what happens.
Ant's first sculpture was produced - 'The Mermaid'..
In early 2007 Ant was again hit with bad news - he'd developed a melonoma in his eye.
This was removed & radiation therapy followed..
Later on in the same year Ant moved to Millicent to pursue the soul-mate that had been set on his path..
In 2009 Ant & his new wife purchased an ex rollerskating/squash centre in Millicent with over 100 sq.
metres of floorspace to showcase his now growing number of redgum sculptures.
The building was entirely renovated over the next 3 yrs & the upper private area has been developed into a huge modern home. The building also features Ant's work areas where all of his carvings are created.
This building is now known as Ant's Redgum Gallery..
Ant is continually producing beautiful sculptures & has nearly 90 of them on display for the public to see, he always has 3 or 4 pieces on the go...some to build his private collection for public viewing & commisioned pieces..
He has exhibited at Bompas in Beachport, Tall Timbers (Millicent): - runner up furniture section - 2011 - 'Collingwood Bench Seat', & in 2012 he took out both the sculpture section (The Wife - Ahead of the rest) & the peoples choice award with 'Burl Snail'..
Ant is inspired by many things, beginning with the ability to walk around a paddock 'seeing' finished sculptures laying in the wood on the ground.
Many different themes present themselves while veiwing docos.
on TV or during discussions with his muse.
He spends up to 10 hours a day carving, this also being a form of pain relief from the pain that affects him 24/7..
Visitors are greeted by Sweety (The Gallery Dog) & curator, Hatty O'Meara-Martin.
All of the carvings on display have their own stories & this is discussed with visitors if required.
Ant can be seen working as part of the tour.
As 95% of Ants works are truly unique, some of the carvings seen on the gallery floor are for sale.
Other carvings seen, such as the trucks or animals are made to the clients specific specifications via commission, with a deposit required.
Ant is available for consultation in-house, by phone or via our facebook page 'Ants Redgum'.
