Since that time, it has developed into a world-wide team sport and recreational activity.Dragon boats consist of long, narrow boats which seat 20 paddlers in 10 rows with a drummer at the bow and a steersperson at the stern.
Paddlers sit facing forward in the boat and use a specific type of paddle in a synchronized motion to propel the dragon boat forward while the steersperson uses an oar to steer the boat.

In March 2014, a rookie team of paddlers signed up for a pilot program.
In late March 2014, the AMI Dragon Boat Team: Paddlers From Paradise entered into a dragon boat festival on the Manatee River in downtown Bradenton, FL.
With only 12 paddlers, many of whom never paddled a dragon boat prior to the practice the day before, Paddlers From Paradise paddled their hearts out on the race course next to established teams from all over Florida.
We might not have won any awards that day, but the team earned much needed exposure that would help build the team for the pilot program..

In April and May 2014, the AMI Dragon Boat rented a boat from High Five Dragon Boat out of Tampa FL and conducted practice runs during high tide during the week days.
During that time, many people came out to try the sport and many of them fell in love paddling.
The program was deemed a huge success and the Paddlers From Paradise entered their second race in June 2014.
This time, the boats were smaller and only ten paddlers were required.
At this event, the team learned how much their paddling and teamwork improved and the team’s times were faster than they were during the March race.
