Lambertus unzähligen Menschen als Ort, an dem sie ihren Glauben ausüben und gemeinsam Gottesdienst feiern konnten.
Doch im ersten Viertel des 20.
Jahrhunderts zerfiel die Alte Kirche stetig, weil hier keine heiligen Messen mehr stattfanden und die Bürger sich schließlich ihrer Materialien bedienten, um andere Bauwerke zu errichten.
Zuletzt standen lediglich Turm und Umfassungsmauern als offene Ruine, deren Einsturz nur noch eine Frage der Zeit war.
1977 machte der in Spay lebende damalige Direktor der Schottel-Werft, Franz Krautkremer, die Rettung der Alten Kirche zu seinem persönlichen Anliegen.
Er erwarb das Objekt nach langwierigen Verhandlungen mit der Kirchengemeinde und der Diözese Trier und baute das Gebäude wieder auf.
Als Kunst- und Musikliebhaber stattete er es im Laufe der Jahre mit etlichen Sakralkunstwerken und wunderbaren Tasteninstrumenten aus, sodass der Raum für vielfältige kulturelle Veranstaltungen genutzt werden kann.
Schon seit den 1980er Jahren finden hier regelmäßig Konzerte mit herausragenden Künstlern statt, die der Alten Kirche Spay einen bemerkenswerten Ruf als Kulturzentrum weit über die Grenzen des Landes hinaus eingebracht haben..
