Detailed description is Akureyri er en islandsk universitetsby og er med sine 17 157 innbyggere (ved utgangen av 2007) Islands fjerde største by, etter Reykjavík, Hafnarfjörður og Kópavogur.
Byen ligger i regionen Norðurland eystra ved ringvei 1 (Hringvegur) og har også en egen flyplass.
