28 Ekim 1957 tarihinde Malatya’da doğdu.
Altı yaşında babasının hediye ettiği bağlama ile tanıştı.
İlkokulu Malatya'da okudu.
Okuldan geri kalan zamanlarında plak ve kaset satan bir dükkanda çalışmaya başladı.
Ailesinin geçim sıkıntısı çekmesi nedeniyle İstanbul Kocamustafapaşa'ya göç ettiler ve okulu bıraktı.
İşportacılık ve çıraklık gibi çeşitli vasıfsız işlerde çalıştı.
Birkaç arkadaşıyla birlikte Halk Birimleri Derneği'nin çalışmalarına katıldı.
Çeşitli etkinliklerde bağlama çaldı.

1978 yılında Gelibolu'da askerlik yaptı.
Askerlik dönüşü Gülten Kaya ile evlendi.
1982 yılında kızları Çiğdem doğdu.
Ağlama Bebeğim albümünü 1985 yılında yayınladı.
Gülten Hayaloğlu ile evlendi.
1986'da Şafak Türküsü albümü çıktı.
Aynı yıl An Gelir albümünü yayınladı.
1987 yılında kızı Melis doğdu.
Gülten Hayaloğlu ile evlendikten sonra kardeşi Yusuf Hayaloğlu’nun şiirleriyle tanıştı.
Sözlerinin çoğunluğunun Yusuf Hayaloğlu'na ait olduğu Yorgun Demokrat albümü 1987 yılında yayınlandı.
1988 yılında Başkaldırıyorum’u çıkarttı.
1989 yılında sadece bağlama ve vokalin oluşturduğu konserlerinden bir derleme olan Resitaller-1'i yayınladı.
Aynı yıl İyimser Bir Gül'ü yayınladı.

1990 yılında Resitaller-2 albümü çıktı.
Aynı yılın Ekim ayında çeşitli şairlerin şiirlerinden oluşan Sevgi Duvarı isimli albümünü çıkarttı.
Ardından Şarkılarım Dağlara albümünü çıkardı..

1990 yılında Tatar Ramazan ve 1992 yılında Tatar Ramazan Sürgünde filmlerinin müziğini yaptı.
1994 yılında prodüksiyonu'nu Gülten Kaya ve Yusuf Hayaloğlu'nun yaptığı, Kanal D'de yayınlanan ‘Ahmet Abi'nin Vapuru’ programını yaptı.
Bu programa ülkücü işadamı Nihat Akgün'ün katılması ve işadamı Fadıl Akgündüz’ün sahibi olduğu JetPA'nın sponsorluğunu yapması sol çevreler tarafından eleştirildi.
16 Kasım 2000 tarihinde Paris’te öldü.
