Das Affentor war das südlichste der mittelalterlichen Stadttore von Frankfurt am Main in Sachsenhausen.GeschichteIm Zuge der durch Kaiser Ludwig des Bayern genehmigten Stadterweiterung von 1333 wurde Sachsenhausen um 1390 mit einer Stadtmauer umgeben.
Seitdem führte der von und nach Süden fließende Verkehr durch ein neu angelegtes Stadttor, das Affentor.
Der Straßenzug vom Affentor zur Frankfurter Mainbrücke über die Elisabethenstraße und die Brückenstraße teilte Sachsenhausen in die beiden Quartiere Oberhausen und Unterhausen.Bei der Belagerung Frankfurts 1552 im Fürstenkrieg erlitt Sachsenhausen erhebliche Schäden.
Auch das Affentor wurde dabei beschädigt.
Ein weiteres südwestlich davon gelegenes Stadttor, das Oppenheimer Tor, wurde nach 1552 sogar ganz geschlossen.Anfang des 19.
Jahrhunderts wurden die alten Frankfurter Stadtbefestigungen geschleift, weil sie ihre militärische Bedeutung verloren hatten.
Auch das Affentor wurde 1809 abgerissen.
An seiner Stelle errichtete Johann Friedrich Christian Hess 1810/11 die beiden klassizistischen Affentorhäuser als Zoll- und Wachlokale, zwischen denen die Straße hindurchführte.
Noch bis 1837 wurden nachts die Stadttore verschlossen, danach hatten die Tore aufgrund der raschen Ausdehnung des bebauten Stadtgebiets ihre Funktion verloren.
