Tudo começou em 1955, quando a Swift-King Ranch (SKR) importou seis animais dos Estados Unidos para o Brasil, vindos de sua matriz norte-americana, a famosa King Ranch, no Texas, a maior fazenda dos EUA.
À medida que vários pecuaristas, banqueiros e homens de negócios tiveram a oportunidade de conhecer os animais Quarto de Milha, começaram a pressionar a SKR para que lhes vendessem alguns exemplares.
A companhia atendeu a poucos criadores, vendendo um número reduzido de potros.
Em 15 de agosto de 1969, foi fundada a Associação Brasileira de Criadores de Cavalo Quarto de Milha (ABQM), no Parque da Água Branca, em São Paulo, onde se encontra atualmente..
