Detailed description is 飛爐建寺三百餘年，承辦台灣地區十二項大型地方節慶--高雄內門宋江陣嘉年華會 本寺境緣清初皆為「大傑巔社」地，時為諸羅縣治轄；康熙末年始稱「羅漢門」，到雍正九年（西元一七三一）才撥歸台灣縣管轄，一直至日據時期大正九年（民國九年）（西元一九二○）劃歸高雄州屬旗山郡稱「內門庄」，光復後改稱「內門鄉」。.
境內開發甚早，追源溯流，依郭氏家譜記載，可溯至清時康熙三十五年（西元一六九六），郭氏為藉神庥航程平安，即由福建省德化縣五穀溪隨迎觀音佛祖金身渡海來台開墾；扺台後，落腳於今本鄉觀亭村番子路（祖厝）。.
郭氏來台後，神蹟履顯，相傳供奉佛祖座前之香爐，竟不翼而飛，遍尋不著，後發現置於附近林中三叉樹枝上（現仍置於本寺內殿），也甚奇異，爐中香火未熄，仍香煙裊遶。.
郭氏即將香爐請回安放原處，隔日還是不見，原先以為有人惡作劇，因此，門戶深鎖，仍復如此，事聞於鄉里，甚感靈異，信眾日廣，膜拜參香者絡繹不絕，善信感沐神庥，大家聚資共議，並徵得郭氏之同意，即在林中原樹幹下為基地（現在寺址）初建簡祠，崇祀神尊。.
佛祖自西土東來，數顯靈蹟，飛爐示景擇地，地理居坐蓮花穴，環境二層龍水環繞，四面重山聳立；東抱龍潭吐務，西擁虎岫生風，南有銀屏獻瑞，北拱七星墜地，巍峨名山聖地，是今日靈威顯赫，慈暈普照，霑庥大地之所憑依也。.
後來漢人陸續移居此，庄里漸趨繁榮，領地日拓，佛祖神威遠播，遐邇盡知，香火鼎盛，煙祀不輟，參香者摩肩擦踵，舊時草葺簡祠，已不敷容眾，即由當時分駐羅漢門之台灣縣丞葉文炳籌備肇基建寺，至雍正十一年（西元一七三三）殿宇始告完竣，名為「紫竹寺」。.
本寺草創迄今，煙香綿延已三百餘年，歷經五次重（修）建，分別在乾隆十七年（西元一七五二）為僧人募捐重修之，嘉慶十九年（西元一八一五），光緒九年（西元一八八三），民國十七年（西元一九二八）為當時庄長陳清己負責重修及民國五十七年（西元一九六八）。.
最近一次之重建是在民國五十七年（西元一九六八）七月二十三日信徒代表大會，有感於廟堂內已無法容納遠道而來與日俱增的香客，又寺貌久經風雨侵蝕，建物也老舊，實有礙觀瞻，因此決議重建。.
曆時十二年，蒙各地善信大德，自誠樂捐，佛祖庇祐，順利完成宏偉殿宇，巍峨莊嚴，奠下本寺萬年丕基。
