TOKYO, May 26 (Xinhua) Japan s health ministry said the number of COVID-19 patients nationwide designated as being in a serious condition rose to a record high of 1,413 on Wednesday.
The number of serious-ill patients who typically need intensive care treatment in hospitals and require the use of ventilators or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) machines jumped by 119 from a day earlier, the ministry said.
The officials said 4,536 new cases and 116 deaths were recorded on Wednesday.
The total infections since the outbreak here have risen to 730,646 across the country, with the death toll increasing to 12,640 people, according to the latest figures.

The first bid for Yubari Melon has been a celebration market every year. In 2019, two melons were auctioned for 5 million yen (about $46,300), the highest bid. But last year the price dropped to 120,000 yen (about $1,111) due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

TOKYO, May 16 (Xinhua) An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 struck off Japan s Hokkaido Prefecture on Sunday, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
The temblor occurred at around 0:24 p.m. local time, with its epicenter at a latitude of 41.9 degrees north and a longitude of 144.9 degrees east, and at depth of 60 km.
The quake logged 3 in some parts of Hokkaido Prefecture on the Japanese seismic intensity scale which peaks at 7.
