Italy haven’t lost a match in the last 33, and it could be a massive comedown. But one thing is clear: English nationalism is coming home. In 1966, when England won the World Cup, the flag of choice was the Union Jack. We won’t be seeing much of that tonight. Perhaps the most abiding image of the Euros was Boris Johnson standing on that massive Cross of St George outside Downing Street. I can’t think of any prime minister who would have done anything similar. Traditional Tories would have thought it vulgar to pose so shamelessly on a national symbol. Liberal Tories like David Cameron would have feared association with the far right, whose emblem that was until very recently.

I think it was the great political writer Hugo Young who pointed out that Margaret Thatcher had a knack of standing at the despatch box when she was Prime Minister in a manner that made her look like a powerless little battler, as opposed to the most powerful person in the country shutting the pits and creating mass unemployment with wrong-headed economic policies (though not necessarily wrong-headed for a small number of people who grew very wealthy).

The news that Andrew Marr is itching to free himself from the restraints of the BBC’s code of impartiality induces a wry smile; it might fairly be asked ‘who do you think you are kidding Andy?’ because while Mr Marr strives hard to stay neutral in his interviews it has always been clear exactly where his sympathies lie. Andrew Marr was, is, and always will be a man-of-the-left. And like so many of his BBC colleagues the effort of maintaining the veneer of even-handedness is proving burdensome.
