Oswald Feliz wasn’t getting too much attention ahead of the March 23 special election for New York City Council. Lots of money was being spent by independent expenditure committees on other candidates, and one of his opponents was hoping to make history as the first transgender member of the City Council. But it was the low-profile Feliz, a tenant lawyer at Bronx Legal Services, who came out on top. And after a three-week wait to count votes in one of the city’s first elections using ranked-choice voting, Feliz is taking office in the 15th Council District in the Bronx, which had been vacant since Rep. Ritchie Torres left for Washington, D.C.

CUNY becomes tobacco-free
City University of New York (CUNY) faculty and staff took to the Bronx to call for change.
The CUNY Rising Alliance and the Professional Staff Congress (PSC-CUNY) held a rally at Hostos Community College and marched to the Bronx County Courthouse calling for increased funding for CUNY along with a New Deal for CUNY.
With an April 1 deadline, students, lawmakers and community members are also pushing for a “New Deal” for CUNY.
Barbara Bowen, president of the Professional Staff Congress, said the importance of CUNY (whose student body is 64% of people of color and 69% women) cannot be overstated and the union’s desire are justified.

Before Dianne Morales secured her lane as an underdog, left-leaning candidate in New York City’s mayoral race, she was a longtime nonprofit executive leading organizations helping youth and families in the city. For former staff and nonprofit executives familiar with her, Morales was a well-respected leader with a passion for taking innovative approaches to helping underserved communities.
Her path into the nonprofit sector started while she spent a summer after her freshman year of college working at a residential camp, now known as Ramapo for Children, primarily serving inner-city kids. “I recognized … that a lot of the kids that we were working with came from my zip code,” Morales, who now sits on the board of the nonprofit, told City & State. “And I sort of had a moment where I thought, well, why them and not me.”
