Unite leadership contender Howard Beckett in row over call to use defence cash on traveller sites

A candidate for the leadership of one of Britain s biggest unions sparked uproar over suggestions the UK s defence budget should be diverted to pay for gypsy and traveller sites. Howard Beckett is running to succeed Len McCluskey as general secretary of Unite, whose membership includes thousands of defence workers. But he suffered a backlash after his supporters claimed he would seek to slash military spending, putting jobs at risk. In a statement announcing it would support Mr Beckett s candidacy, campaign group Labour Black Socialists said: He believes in a foreign policy that promotes peace not war. The government has 143 military bases in 42 countries - money that could be spent on reinforcing flood defences, making sites available for Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities, support for youth within communities, support for women suffering from domestic and gender-based violence.

Unite union reported to police over cash for plot to oust anti-Corbyn MPs | News

Trade unions have spent too long amplifying Labour fantasies It s time they got back to reality

Against a backdrop of apathy and to no great fanfare, important events are unfolding within the Labour movement. The candidates to succeed Len McCluskey as general secretary of Unite, Labour’s largest affiliate union and biggest paymaster, are seeking the branch nominations needed to gain entry to the ballot of members. The threshold for getting on to the ballot was raised, for this contest, from 50 to 174 and the definition of what constitutes a “branch” was loosened. This allows activists to take even greater control and three of the candidates – Steve Turner, Howard Beckett and Sharon Graham – are, lo and behold, salaried employees of the union. Only Gerard Coyne, who had the temerity to challenge McCluskey in 2017,

Unite s left-wing leadership candidates back Scotland s right to a second independence referendum

THE three left-wing candidates vying to be Unite’s next general secretary have backed Scotland’s right to hold a second independence referendum. The commitments from Steve Turner, Howard Beckett and Sharon Graham, made at a hustings held by Unite Hospitality Glasgow last week, echo votes by the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) last month. They are at odds with the position of Scottish Labour, with leader Anas Sarwar resisting calls for the party to support another vote. Mr Beckett, who said he would argue for greater devolution  a “devo-max” option  to be considered alongside independence in any future vote, warned that Labour had “never recovered” from siding with the Tories to back a No vote in the 2014 independence referendum.
