GOP Lawmakers Look To Strip Powers From Arizona s Election Head

By Howard Fischer Capitol Media Services PHOENIX Republican lawmakers took the first steps Tuesday to strip Secretary of State Katie Hobbs of some of her powers. Measures approved by both the House and Senate Appropriations committees would take away her power to defend state election laws and give it to Attorney General Mark Brnovich. It even prevents her from being able to get legal advice from the Attorney General s Office. And it also would remove her purview over the Capitol Museum located in the historic Capitol. But they insist it s not personal, not a power grab and not punishment for her political stance, even as several said how unhappy they are with things she s done.

Arizona Lawmakers Look to Fund DPS Body Cameras

Capitol Media Services PHOENIX State lawmakers are moving to fund body cameras for Department of Public Safety officers but only after restricting when people can get access to the footage. Members of the House and Senate Appropriations Committees approved $6.9 million for purchase of the equipment. There also is cash for ongoing operation, including storage. But the measure which now needs approval of both chambers also says that what s on the video can be released only if everyone on the video, excluding the officer, has provided consent or that their images cannot be identified. More significant, it permits the DPS to withhold all videos unless it determines there is an important public purpose for release. And that provision bothered Rep. Randall Friese, D-Tucson, who questioned allowing the state agency to make that decision, particularly when its own officers are involved.
