Double That Feature #1: John Carpenter s THE THING

The Thing on a train… so think Agatha Christie’s The Thing From Another World Murders on the Orient Express and you have a pretty good idea about what it all entails. Lee and Cushing play men of science who accidentally let an ancient monstrosity run amok on the locomotive, which would already be bad enough… but there’s more. Turns out, this damn dirty ape kills by sucking the intelligence out of its victims. On top of that, it can mind-swap with people, taking over the bodies of whoever looks into its eyes (that’s where Campbell’s influence comes in). At least the passengers can take solace in the fact the trip won’t be boring!

Diane Adler, Trailblazing Editor of The Rockford Files, Dies at 97

Adler died Thursday in Los Angeles, her family announced. A beloved member of the American Cinema Editors and the Motion Picture Editors Guild, Adler for two decades spearheaded ACE and MPEG s Invisible Art/Visible Artists program and luncheon, held the day before the Oscars with the film editing nominees. The program is slated to be held Saturday in a virtual environment because of the pandemic. A Los Angeles native, Adler made a name for herself in the field of editing at a time when it was dominated by men. She entered the business in the 50s, when she was recently divorced, in order to earn enough money to send her son and daughter to college. That began with a job as a secretary making $115 a week at Bronson Studios in Hollywood.

Nolte: What Should’ve Won the Best Picture Oscar – 1950 to 1959 20 Apr 2021 In part four of this series we look at the movies that should have won the Best Picture Oscar between 1950 and 1959. The cult of oh-so-sophisticated movie writers love to run down the 50’s, as a decade lost to Eisenhower-era conformity and cinematic bloat crafted by studios desperate to compete with TV. As you’ll see below, nothing could be further from the truth. The 1950s were an embarrassment of movie riches. Let’s begin… What a year for movies. Sunset Boulevard, The Asphalt Jungle, Where the Sidewalk Ends, D.O.A., Broken Arrow, The Third Man, Panic in the Streets… Still, writer-director Joseph Mankiewicz’s timeless tale of ambition, deceit, and getting your just desserts refuses to age. A hoot of a classic filled with amazing dialogue, a Marilyn Monroe appearance, a Bette Davis performance for the ages, and an ending that still offends tight-assed feminists.
