After a year of COVID-related interruption, the Blue Star Mothers New York Chapter 4 will resume its annual Gold Star Memorial Remembrance Ceremony on Saturday, May 29, at 10 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park on West Third and Logan streets in Jamestown.
Held annually the Saturday before Memorial Day, the Blue Star Mothers will honor in remembrance those Western New York residents who have died in the service of the United States by memorializing them and acknowledging their Gold Star families left behind. Originally established in May 2013, and desiring that these sacrifices never be forgotten, the local Blue Star Mothers Chapter has secured the privilege of commemorating Western New York’s local Gold Star families with a memorial display, serving as a daily visual remembrance. You might not expect that a degree in psychology could be a prerequisite for a rewarding career in construction, but that is precisely how health and safety advisor Holly Baker set out on her professional trajectory.
“I want to help people,” Holly admits. “Construction gives me a chance to make a real difference to people’s lives.”

GLOVERSVILLE – Many stray and feral cats have found homes in cat shelters dotted throughout the greater Capital Region thanks in part to Angel Mariani.
The Gloversville resident has made several hundred of the shelters over the years, using blankets and bins filled with straw. She often gives them to people who reach out to her on Facebook.
“They are life-saving. [For] cats out there that don’t have a warm home, it is a very rough winter,” Mariani said.
Mariani has had a passion for animals since she was a child and remembers her father bringing home stray cats when she was growing up. While the work that she does with the cat shelters is independent, she volunteers with animal organizations like Kitten Angels and runs a Facebook group called Kitty Connection dedicated to educating people about cats and how to care for them.
