New Budget, Eligibility in the Local Context Program, Mental Health Awareness: Key Takeaways from UC Regents Meeting

UC President Michael V. Drake attributed the increase to pandemic-related financial loss. 

University, Community Organizations and Public Health Bring Vaccines to Isla Vista

May 20, 2021 at 10:00 am by Holly Rusch In partnership with local community organizations, the Santa Barbara County Department of Public Health has provided mobile 77 vaccine clinics around the county — 66 first-dose clinics and 11 second-dose — administering over 1,400 vaccinations.  The clinic received 289 appointments through the Student Health Service Gateway Portal. (Kaiyi Yang / Daily Nexus) Locations close to Isla Vista include UC Santa Barbara Student Health, the Goleta Valley Community Center and the upcoming clinic at fraternity Sigma Chi’s chapter house. Generally, the county offers organizations a choice of providing the Moderna or Johnson & Johnson vaccine, according to Jackie Ruiz, the public information officer at the Public Health Department. 

A S Senate Unanimously Passes Bill To Reform Honorarium for Senators and BCUs

May 14, 2021 at 6:56 pm by Holly Rusch The Associated Students unanimously passed a bill that raises the honorarium cap of A.S. elected and appointed officials and senators on Wednesday, to go into effect during the 2021-22 school year. While the bill required a two-thirds majority in the Senate to pass, it was passed unanimously. Senators elected to the 2021-22 senate, as well as senators planning to work with a BCU for the 2021-22 school year, recused themselves from the vote.  Kaitlyn Nguyen / Daily Nexus The bill will make Associated Students (A.S.) spaces — including Boards, Commissions and Units (BCU), the 38 organizations that work within A.S. to provide and organize student events, advocacy and leadership — more accessible to low-income, first generation and marginalized students, according to the bill’s author, Senator Esme Quintero-Cubillan.

Isla Vista Boat Boys Clarify: It was completely sailable

May 13, 2021 at 6:05 pm by Atmika Iyer and Holly Rusch On the night of May 7, three UC Santa Barbara students took a trip to the local Albertsons near Isla Vista, where they found a kiddie pool. Inspired, the three housemates purchased two kiddie pools and began brainstorming on how to turn it into a boat and take it into the ocean. The housemates built this vessel with home depot buckets, a wooden board and Albertson’s kiddie pools. Photo courtesy of the Santa Barbara Fire Department. Unbeknownst to them, the story of their late-night escapade and eventual rescue would soon become international news, picked up by the Los Angeles Times, the Associated Press and even a Bulgarian news outlet, an experience the boys called “weird.” 

$900 now : Young Democratic Socialists of America Holds Student March To Demand COVID-19 Relief Checks

May 10, 2021 at 11:01 pm by Holly Rusch The UC Santa Barbara student organization Young Democratic Socialists of America held a march on May 8 to demand that the university distribute $900 COVID-19 relief checks to all students.  A protestor chalks the sidewalk outside Chancellor Henry T. Yang’s house, where Young Democratic Socialists of America (YDSA) leadership, students and community participants gave speeches on their demands for the university in front of his home.
