Michigan lawmakers back push to reform military prosecution of sexual assault

Washington After years of debate, Congress appears poised to remove military commanders from decisions about whether to prosecute sexual assault cases in the armed services, giving that authority instead to independent military lawyers outside the chain of command.
The move has bipartisan support among members of the Michigan s congressional delegation, who say they ve lost confidence in the military leaders ability to rein in the prevalence
of sexual assault and harassment in the ranks. It just hasn t worked. We haven t seen the improvements, said Sen. Debbie Stabenow, a member of the Senate s Democratic leadership.

WKAR s Sarah Lehr reports on Rep. Elissa Slotkin asking for a private FBI briefing on its investigation of Larry Nassar.
A report released in July by the U.S. Department of Justice s Inspector General found the FBI failed to follow up on allegations against Nassar with necessary urgency. It also said investigators made false statements that covered up their missteps.
Slotkin said FBI agents need to be held accountable if they are found to have broken the law, and that could include criminal charges.
“If they lied to law enforcement, if they hid things from other law enforcement officers, even as law enforcement officers themselves, they should have to face consequences the same way a normal civilian would face consequences, said Slotkin, whose district includes Michigan State University where Nassar was a sports doctor.

Michigan lawmakers split on commission to probe Jan. 6 attack

Washington The proposal to create an independent commission to probe the violent Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol split Michigan lawmakers ahead of Wednesday s vote on a House resolution, though members from both parties said they intended to back it.
At least two Michigan Republicans, Reps. Fred Upton and Peter Meijer, were expected to join a couple dozen other GOP House members in bucking their leadership to support the formation of the panel.
Both spoke on the House floor during the debate Wednesday, with Meijer, the freshman lawmaker from Grand Rapids Township, stressing the panel would produce a report for the public to clear away myths and fictions and get right on the facts. He condemned efforts to whitewash the events of Jan. 6.
