Hospitality students adapt to COVID-19 changes to safely serve food DeKALB –  A quantity food production class at NIU, also known as Hospitality 320, is cooking, serving and selling their fresh food from noon to 1 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday until April 15 at the Depot C-Store in the Holmes Student Center. The students are broken up into smaller groups to practice better social distancing habits and meals are sold to-go, said  John Boswell, instructor and director of Retail Dining. SGA Senate appoints supreme court justice, approves student organizations

Northern Star DeKALB – The Student Government Association Senate unanimously confirmed Brenna McConnell, sophomore finance major with a marketing minor, as an SGA Supreme Court justice. Supreme court justices in SGA operate similarly to the federal Supreme Court, McConnell said. Whenever there is a gray area or a case the Senate moves up, the supreme court hears it. They do not meet as frequently as the Senate. McConnell is very involved but said her experiences led her to be able to separate her personal life and work-life very well. “I’m very passionate about SGA’s mission statement, which is that not only every student is heard, but heard fairly,” McConnell said. “With current events, I think it’s so, so important that biases are left at the door, and you listen to the facts, hear each person, and you don’t judge them before you hear all the facts.”

Alpha Phi Gamma midterm goodie bags fundraiser

Northern Star DeKALB- Alpha Phi Gamma will hold a fundraising event Tuesday. The sorority will be selling “good luck goodie bags” throughout the month of March, at a time where many students face midterms. While prices for the goodie bags vary, they all will contain “note taking materials and a handwritten letter,” according to the event page. How to vote in the 2021 consolidated elections

Northern Star February 26, 2021 What are consolidated elections? The consolidated elections happen in odd-numbered years. This election, which always falls on the first Tuesday of April, is to elect municipal, township, park district, library district, school district, community college district, regional office of education trustees and fire district officials.  The offices up for election are mayor, city clerk, treasurer, alderpeople or trustee as municipal officials, supervisor, clerk, assessor/multi-township assessor, highway commissioner, and trustees as township officials, commissioners for the park district, trustees for the public and township libraries, trustees for regional board of school trustees, board members for the school district, trustees for the community college district and trustees for the fire protection district.

The Academic, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion department will host event to better help understand isms

DeKalb — The Academic, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Department will host a virtual town hall event, “What is Holding us Back?” Understanding- isms (Part 1) from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Feb. 4.   The town hall conversation will allow students to engage and ask questions about “Isms,” along with a panel of guest.
