Grand Canyon Uranium Mining Ban Reintroduced In Congress

0:54 Rep. Grijalva and 16 other Democrats introduced the Grand Canyon Protection Act Monday in the U.S. House of Representatives. It’s similar to other attempts to withdraw more than a million acres adjacent to the national park from future uranium mining while leaving existing claims intact. In 2012, then-U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar banned new uranium claims for 20 years. Conservationists worry about the possible negative effects expanded mining could have on the Grand Canyon’s groundwater and springs. The Havasupai Tribe says if the moratorium is allowed to expire it would present a grave threat to its sole water source. The Hopi Tribe and Navajo Nation also support the permanent ban.

California Developer Withdraws Application For Sedona Glamping Project

A California-based developer has withdrawn an application to build a controversial glamping, or glamorous camping, project on nearly 18-acres of private land in Sedona. Bear Mountain in Sedona near the site of a proposed glamping project. The developer recently withdrew the application following community and tribal opposition. Credit Charley Pitcher The company AutoCamp had proposed 100 campsites with fire pits along with 85 Airstream trailers, a clubhouse and other amenities near Bear Mountain. About 1,300 residents opposed the project saying it’s an ecologically sensitive area prone to wildfire. Environmental groups also fought the proposal along with the Hopi Tribe and Yavapai Apache Nation who say the area is a sacred site and contains cultural items, petroglyphs and ancestral remains.
