Victoria’s second wave was directly caused by Daniel Andrews’ failures in Hotel Quarantine. It led to 801 deaths, 20,000 infections, 200,000 jobs lost and millions of Victorians locked in their homes for months.
If a private sector business was responsible for such damage the directors would be held accountable. Yet the Premier and his ministers refuse to accept accountability, preferring to selfishly cling to their jobs.
Andrews Refuses to Resign Over ‘Lack of Due-Diligence’ in Hotel Quarantine System
In response to the Hotel Quarantine report, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said he would not resign after asserting a “lack of due-diligence” was behind the failures in the government’s quarantining system.
“Our commitment and my commitment as the leader of the government is to learn those lessons. And make sure that an error like this, … that lack of due diligence to check and double-check that things are as they should be, and if a problem is found it is found early rather than found too late,” Andrews told reporters at a press conference on Monday.

Ms Coate said police would have been a better cohort than private guards. Consideration was not given to the appropriateness or implications of using a largely casualised workforce in an environment where staff had a high likelihood of being exposed to the highly infectious COVID-19, Ms Coate said in her report on Monday.

The final report of the COVID-19 Hotel Quarantine Inquiry, issued by former judge Jennifer Coate, outlines monumental errors made by the Victorian government and its public servants.
Despite this, the governmental failings that led to a second wave of the pandemic, resulting in 800 deaths, are likely to be politically irrelevant.
The clever strategy by Premier Daniel Andrews to defer analysis of these missteps until the virus had been suppressed makes the findings largely academic and historical.
