Man Accused of Weekend Shooting Charged with Three Counts of First Degree Murder

By Jeremy Coumbes on March 3, 2021 at 11:13am The Jacksonville man accused of the shooting death of a former Jacksonville resident over the weekend made his first appearance in court this morning. 37-year-old Joshua E. Wilson of Jacksonville was arraigned in Morgan County Court this morning. Wilson was charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the death of 26-year-old Malcolm V. Fitts of Chicago and formerly of Jacksonville. Fitts died of gunshot wounds at Passavant Area Hospital just before 7:00 am Sunday, after Jacksonville Police were called to the scene of a shooting in the parking lot of the Turner High Rise Apartment Complex in the 800 block of Hoagland Boulevard at approximately 5:30 am.

Wilson, 37, of 27 Lavan Drive was arrested Tuesday on a charge of murder in the death of Malcolm V. Fitts, 26, of Chicago. Fitts, who is from Jacksonville, died about an hour after arriving Sunday at Passavant Area Hospital with a gunshot wound. Police had been called to the 800 block of Hoagland Boulevard about 5:30 a.m. Sunday because of reports of shots being fired. Wilson was being held Wednesday in the Morgan County Detention Facility. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for March 30.

Investigators Believe Sunday Shooting an Isolated Incident

By Jeremy Coumbes on March 1, 2021 at 3:52pm Jacksonville Police were called at 5:23 Sunday morning to the 800 block of Hoagland Boulevard after a caller to the Joint Morgan County Dispatch Center reported gunshots being fired in the parking lot of the Turner High Rise Apartment Complex. According to police records, the caller stated they heard seven to eight shots fired and could hear screaming. Jacksonville Police Investigators say while officers searched the area of the incident, 26-year-old Malcom Fitts of Chicago and formerly of Jacksonville arrived at Passavant Area Hospital by a personal vehicle. Fitts was pronounced dead at 6:52 yesterday morning at Passavant, according to a joint statement this morning by Police Chief Adam Mefford and Morgan County Coroner Marcy Patterson.

Malcolm Fitts, formerly of Jacksonville, died at 6:52 a.m. Sunday at Passavant Area Hospital. Morgan County Coroner Marcy Patterson said an autopsy was completed Monday and, while final results will take several weeks, preliminary findings indicate gunshot wounds were the cause of death. No other information from the autopsy was being released Monday.
