Construction of the first phase of a new wetlands education center in Houma should be complete by early fall. Rain has sort of pushed our schedule back, and so we re looking at more of a substantial completion being done in August fingers crossed, said Jonathan Foret, executive director of the South Louisiana Wetlands Discovery Center. If we have weeks and weeks of rain and hurricanes and things like that, then that could back us up a little bit more.
The center, on 2.4 acres at 86 Valhi Blvd, near the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center, broke ground in January. At the time, officials had hoped to finish the first phase by the end of May.

Sandbags available this weekend at Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center

Terrebonne Parish officials will provide sand and sandbags this weekend to get prepared for hurricane season.
The sand and sandbags will be distributed from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center, 346 Civic Center Blvd.
Residents can find the sand and sandbags on the skate park side parking lot near the library. Residents are being asked to bring their own shovels.
Hurricane season began Tuesday and runs through Nov. 30.
Synergy Bank President Jerry Ledet to deliver commencement address at Fletcher Community College

Jerry P. Ledet Jr., president and CEO of Synergy Bank, will deliver the keynote address at Fletcher Technical Community College s upcoming graduation ceremony.
About 600 students will participate in \the ceremony, scheduled for 1 p.m. May 21 at the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center, 346 Civic Center Blvd. Students will particpate from classes going back to summer 2019 who were not able to participate in formal commecements that were canceled due to COVID-19.
Ledet, in the banking field for 38 years, is now chairman of the board of the Louisiana Bankers Association. A native of Thibodaux, he is president of the Rotary Club of Houma and was named by The Courier as Terrebonne s Most Useful Citizen of 2018.
