At a time when so many are dying against their will, it may seem out of sync to discuss the option of having a doctor help people end their lives when they face intolerable suffering that no treatment can relieve.
It’s less a question of uncontrollable physical pain, which prompts only a minority of requests for medical aid in dying, than it is a loss of autonomy, a loss of dignity, a loss of quality of life and an inability to engage in what makes people’s lives meaningful.

M. Susan (Axelson) Wright, 81, of Jamestown, N.Y., went to be with her Lord and Savior April 1, 2021, at UPMC Chautauqua in Jamestown, N.Y.
She was born November 7, 1939, in Jamestown, N.Y., daughter of the late Ralph and Mary Lindstrom Axelson.
Sue was a 1957 graduate of Jamestown High School and a 1960 graduate of Highland Hospital School of Nursing in Rochester, N.Y.
After graduation from nursing school Sue earned her RN and worked for Jamestown General Hospital and then WCA Hospital, retiring in 1998 after many years as a surgical nurse in the operating room.
Upon retirement, she enjoyed helping with household sales, knitting, baking, cooking, and celebrating her Swedish heritage. But most of all she spent her life helping others and trying to always do something special for someone.
