It was another summer night in 1981. Hundreds of people gathered for a tea dance at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Kansas City, Mo., on July 17.
Among them were Karen Jeter, 37, and her husband, Eugene, 48, who had just gotten married a couple of weeks earlier. She was a really good dancer. Loved to dance, loved music. She s the one that taught me how to dance, said Karen s son, Brent Wright. They were really wonderful people.
Television crews were also at the Hyatt Regency that night to cover the social event in the hotel s lobby. Years later, Wright would watch footage of Karen and Eugene Jeter on a national news show.

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV/AP) - Kansas City, Missouri, on Saturday marked the 40th anniversary of one of its greatest tragedies with a release of white doves. About 100 people gathered at the Skywalk Memorial Plaza to remember the 114 people killed when disaster struck the Hyatt Regency Hotel on July 17, 1981.
Forty years ago, Lynn Driggers was getting ready to go out to dinner with her husband when she got the call. The Hyatt Regency, she was told, had collapsed. Driggers worked as a nurse at St. Mary s Hospital, then located near the site at 28th Street and Main, and she d been summoned to work to perform triage.
