ISLAMABAD: The government has started the process of increasing electricity tariffs to generate more than Rs1 trillion additional revenue for distribution companies of ex-Wapda to meet their revenue requirements for the fiscal year 2020-21.
The increases are being sought on account of annual adjustments, indexations of distribution margins for FY2020-21 and some prior-year adjustments in line with agreements reached with international lending agencies.
As part of the process, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) on Thursday conducted a public hearing on the tariff increase petitions of three major distribution companies (Discos) from Faisalabad, Lahore and Islamabad. The hearing on petitions of other Discos would follow over the next few weeks.

A subcommittee of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has directed the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to investigate the removal of electricity transformers across the country by all power distribution companies (Discos) and submit a detailed report.
During a meeting held under the chairmanship of Convener Noor Alam Khan, the PAC subcommittee directed Discos to take asset declaration from any officer who joins the office including linemen, SDOs and executives.

SUKKUR: Three members of a family were electrocuted Tando Adam district, when an 11,000 KV wire fell down on them. Reports said three members of a family were on their way home riding on a motorcycle at Khando Road in Tando Adam, when an 11,000 KV conductor wire suddenly fell down on them. The victims, identified as Abdul Hakeem, his sons Javeed and Ghulam Kadir Chutto, were electrocuted on the spot. Local residents demonstrated against HESCO over the tragic death of three members of a family and held the power distribution company responsible for death all the three. The protesters further demanded registration of an FIR against executive engineer HESCO and his team. Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO) Spokesperson Saddiq Kuber said the CEO HESCO had suspended the SDO and line superintendent and constituted an inquiry committee.
Prolonged power outages in Hyderabad after rain

HYDERABAD: Owing to rainfall in Hyderabad on Sunday evening, several areas have been facing power outages for many hours. According to the spokesperson of the Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO), out of the 70 feeders that were tripped due to rainfall, power has been restored in 30 of them.
The spokesperson added that the power supply had to be suspended to avoid untoward incidents as trees, signboards, and wires were broken due to the rainfall. Last year, torrential rains had lashed parts of Hyderabad, leading to a similar problem. Aside from prolonged power outages, drains across the city were left inundated. The streets of the second-largest city in Sindh were also flooded due to the rain while water entered houses and caused difficulties for residents.
