Weekly Update: See Which Shrewsbury Area Hospitals Are Nearing Capacity

Reply (Shutterstock) SHREWSBURY, MA While U.S. coronavirus cases and deaths have been trending downward over the past week, hospitals across the country still report straining to meet the demands of the ongoing pandemic. At the national level, during the week ending Jan. 25, deaths were running at an average of just under 3,100 a day down from a peak of more than 3,350 in the weeks prior, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. New cases were averaging about 170,000 a day after hitting almost 250,000 earlier this month. Meanwhile, state health officials in Massachusetts reported to the federal government that 80 percent of all inpatient beds in hospitals across the state were still occupied as of Jan. 23. Around 11 percent of beds statewide were filled by COVID-19 patients, they reported.

The event will be in response to Gov. Charlie Baker’s announcement on Jan. 25 that Massachusetts seniors age 75 and older, followed by those 65 and older or with two underlying conditions, would be prioritized in phase 2 of the state’s vaccination plan, which is scheduled to begin next month. Early education and K-12 workers, food and agriculture workers, and public works and public health workers are also included in the second phase of the state’s plan.

COVID-19 cases continue to plague Athol Published: 1/14/2021 3:25:46 PM Modified: 1/14/2021 3:25:40 PM ATHOL The number of positive cases of COVID-19 in Athol continues to top the century mark. Health Agent Deb Vondal told the Board of Health Tuesday that Athol had more active cases of COVID-19 than at any time since the pandemic began in March. “As of today, we have 418 total cases to date,” Vondal began. “We had eight new cases this morning alone. Three-hundred-three tests have cleared; there were an additional three cleared yesterday, eight cleared the day before. So, that brings us to 115 active cases in town. “Just as an FYI,” she continued, “there are 25 positive cases over at the nursing home (Quabbin Valley Health Care).
