Sapienza Memorial Track and Athletic Field to be Rededicated Next Week After Renovation

Sapienza Memorial Track and Athletic Field at Haverhill High School will be formally rededicated during a ceremony next week. School Committee member Toni Sapienza-Donais, daughter of the man for whom the track is named, made the announcement at Thursday’s School Committee meeting. “I’m pleased to announce that we are going to have our official ribbon-cutting ceremony at Sapienza Memorial Track on Wednesday, May 12, at 2:45 p.m., at the entrance to the track. I’m so proud that this was able to come to fruition after a long time and I thank the mayor for making that happen,” she said.

Broadcast Hall of Famer Ron Chapman, Who Began at WHAV in 1953, Dies at 85

Ron Chapman, who went from his Haverhill High School graduation in 1953 to a job as a WHAV disc jockey and eventually became a national broadcast hall of famer, died Monday at 85. He gained fame under the name “Irving Harrigan” when he joined KLIF, Dallas, where he teamed up with Jack “Charlie Brown” Woods in 1959 on the “Charlie and Harrigan Show.” Chapman was inducted into the National Association of Broadcasters’ Radio Hall of Fame in 2010, the Chicago-based Museum of Broadcast Communications’ Radio Hall of Fame in 2012 and again, as part of the team of Charlie and Harrigan, in 2014.

Haverhill High Principal Burns a Finalist for Executive Principal Job in Salem, Mass

Haverhill High School Principal Glenn Burns notified families Friday he could be leaving since he is a finalist for the job of executive principal in Salem. Burns said in an email that he sought the position in his north shore hometown to reduce his commute and be closer to his family as his oldest child enters school there. “Haverhill High School is a special place and this part of my career is most certainly a cornerstone to my growth as a school leader and parent. The relationships I have built, the passion of this community, and my wife, Kate and two girls Ella and Leah have brought me much thought about my personal goals and areas for growth,” Burns wrote.
