Software as a Service (SaaS) has seen massive growth over the past few years. According to analyst firm Gartner SaaS is the largest cloud market segment, with predicted revenue of more than $120 million in 2021.

This prediction is likely to be less than actual growth, as the pandemic forced businesses to adopt applications and services on cloud platforms. However, one area businesses often fail to consider is their backup and recovery strategy, and how this needs to adapt in a SaaS and cloud-driven environment. Organisations need to ensure their backup strategy has evolved along with their production environment, or risk being unable to recover in the event of a disaster or malware attack.

South Africa has taken a paperless approach to the rollout of the Covid-19 vaccinations, with the Electronic Vaccine Data System (EVDS) being used to store and process patient information.

EVDS also tracks these vaccines and the logistics processes around their delivery. While this system should offer a number of benefits over a more manual approach, not least of which is preventing loss of the vaccines data, it does bring a critical need for data management to the fore.
The health records created by the system contain not only confidential medical information, but many elements of Personally Identifiable Information (PII) as well. All data must therefore be adequately managed, stored and secured across the entire chain, to prevent compliance breaches.
