Demand is rocketing as production gets back on track, but new facilities and site expansions are coming down the line
Producers have complained for years about the challenge of locating studio space in the UK, amid record levels of film and TV production, which hit £3.62bn last year, according to the British Film Institute.
The situation is not going to improve in the short to medium term. With production bouncing back in the autumn after being brought to a pandemic-enforced halt in the spring, there is much industry concern over the ‘traffic jam’ ahead as delayed and newly commissioned shows vie to get made in the new year.
The University of Reading has signed a deal to build a £200m film studio at its science park campus in Berkshire.
Los Angeles film studios investor Commonwealth Real Estate will lease the land and develop the site, which will be called Shinfield Studios.
A contractor has not yet been appointed to the job, but it is hoped it will be completed in late 2022, a statement from the university said.
It is the second major deal in the burgeoning studio-development sector in the past few weeks, with Barking and Dagenham Council agreeing a deal with Los Angeles investor Hackman Capital Partners in November to fund a studio build that will be called Eastbrook Studios London (pictured) .

From: London 1 Data Centre
Today major Japanese global technology services provider NTT Ltd., announces the opening of a new data centre, in Dagenham, East London, expecting to create 100 jobs in a boost to London’s technology sector.
The ‘London 1’ data centre is the latest addition to its growing portfolio, which includes five other data centres in the UK in Hemel Hempstead and Slough. The site is also a location of historic innovation; Winston Churchill benefitted from penicillin developed on the site by May and Baker during World War II, and the famous Ford car factory was adjacent.
