Kansas urges increase of COVID-19 vaccine at long-term care facilities

Nothing is small about Lakeview Village. Between its roughly 800 residents and another 586 staff members, the number of people on the campus of the Lenexa long-term care facility each day rivals some Kansas counties. That has created problems during the COVID-19 pandemic. The facility had multiple outbreaks over the course of the last year. Meanwhile, staff has been forced to call in sick because of infections on a near-constant basis, said Pam Hermon, Lakeview Village s chief operating officer. Vaccines, however, have changed everything. Nearly 100% of residents and 74% of staff have been vaccinated, putting the facility far ahead of the statewide average. No staff cases have been reported since January, Hermon said, and visitation rules have been relaxed  something which is expected to continue.

As state creates loans and investigates, school districts sue over gas bills

As state creates loans and investigates, school districts sue over gas bills The Kansan David Decker had a question he wanted to ask of state legislators during a legislative update for the Newton USD 373 Board of Education.  The director of business services wanted to know what help there might be for school districts paying massive natural gas bills resulting from a winter storm in February.  He learned from Rep. Stephen Owens, R-Hesston, that there are loan funds, investigations ongoing and that the Kansas Corporation Commission worked with Kansas Gas Service to normalize bills.  However, while bills for homeowners did not increase much in Kansas Gas territory, those bills were not normalized for the school district.

School concert a family affair

School concert a family affair The Kansan When Newton High School music groups perform May 2 in Athletic Park  it will be a family affair Both Greg Bergman and Rebecca Schloneger will have children performing during the fund-raising concert.  This has been one of my greatest joys as a teacher. Not many parents get to spend part of each work day with their kids, Bergman said. My boys generally avoid talking to me at school I think because they re embarrassed to call me Dad when their peers call me Mr. Bergman! They will perform as part of musical groups in a unique concert.
