Coaching/GM Notes: Hurney, Lewis, Morris, Lynn, Gettleman
The
Panthers made a big splash Monday by firing GM
Marty Hurney. Although the timing was interesting since Carolina’s season will be over in just a couple of weeks, it wasn’t the result of any sudden developments or changes. The move had apparently been in the works for a while, as Albert Breer of SI.com was told that Hurney was in the final year of his contract and that he and owner
David Tepper had been talking about an exit for weeks now (Twitter link). Breer adds that the analytics-minded Tepper wants to “modernize” the personnel side. As for names to keep an eye on for the now vacant role, Breer tweets that 49ers VP of player personnel

USC cheerleaders during a football game.
USC – one of college football’s most prestigious programs, regardless of the Pac-12’s recent irrelevance – has opted out of playing in a bowl game this postseason.
The Trojans were 5-0 heading into Friday night’s Pac-12 Championship Game versus Oregon. A win would’ve sent USC to a NY6 Bowl, most likely the Fiesta. But the Ducks spoiled USC’s perfect season with a stunning 31-24 win.
With a NY6 Bowl out of the picture, USC has called it quits on bowl season. The Trojans would’ve likely gone to the Alamo, had they’d accepted a bowl invite.

College football s only real major upset occurred deep in the night Saturday, and boy, it was a biggie as Florida went down to LSU.
The rest of the weekend went pretty much as expected.
It was a weekend where a couple of nice stories in 2020 were exposed (Colorado and Miami), but another pair continued their storybook years (Coastal Carolina and San Jose State). Finally, history was made that spanned gender and nationality.
There may not have been as many exciting upsets as we re used to, but there were a lot of reasons to love the action that took place in a jam-packed three days of games. There were a lot of cancellations that robbed us of important matchups such as Ohio State-Michigan, Oregon-Washington and others.

There s plenty of buzz about the 62-year-old potentially getting another shot to lead a team.
Lewis posted a 131-122 record during his 16 seasons with the Bengals. After two years away from the NFL, multiple teams are reportedly interested in talking to him about their potential head coaching vacancy.
He s currently the co-defensive coordinator at Arizona State on Herm Edwards staff.
NFL analyst and former Baltimore Ravens cornerback Domonique Foxworth jumped into the mix on Friday. I m tired of people evaluating Marvin Lewis like fans. Like fans have full-time jobs, they ve got other things to do. So at the end of the day, they look at things like playoff record and/or Super Bowl championships. They re like, OK, he s the GOAT. He s not. We are better than that. We have to take into account context. What Marvin Lewis did at Cincinnati is as impressive as we ve seen jus
