UF Chief Marshal looks to first in-person commencements after a year For many years, Hans van Oostrom, Ph.D., said he felt something was missing from his role as a professor.  At the end of each semester, he said he “checked the box” that said his students were done with their courses and ready to graduate.  And that was it. Off they went. But that was long ago. Now, van Oostrom serves as chief marshal at UF’s commencement ceremonies, an assignment he accepted in Summer 2018, in addition to his day job as founding chair and associate professor at the Department of Engineering Education at the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering.

There are health care  superheroes. Dr. Jennifer Thompson is both. Thompson, an alumna and third-year pediatrics resident at Nicklaus Children s Hospital, is also known as Dr. Spiderman. It started off as a joke in medical school. It was close to Halloween, and Thompson donned a Spiderman costume for a class project. Her classmates and her professor at the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine (HWCOM) loved it. Spidey leaped into action again during her medical school pediatrics rotation. Thompson and her alter ego were asked to help kids with IBD, inflammatory bowel disease, learn about their condition.

UF professor Tao Li retires amid investigation of grad student s death

A computer engineering professor is resigning from the University of Florida amid the university s investigation into the 2019 suicide of one of his graduate students, Huixiang Chen. Tao Li s last day is May 15, according to documents in his personnel file received by The Sun. He was first hired at UF as an assistant professor in 2004 and has been on paid administrative leave since Feb. 15. Li s resignation letter was sent April 10 and accepted April 13, and he will remain on leave until his last day, said Hessy Fernandez, a UF spokeswoman. He is paid $153,239 annually by the university. The four-sentence-long notice  including Li s signature   does not mention Chen s death or the ongoing investigation but merely states his end date and wishes all the best to the UF Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering.

The Robert Kemper Award for Professionalism in Medicine is awarded annually to a recipient who has demonstrated altruism, compassion and empathy towards patients, as well as respect for patients, faculty, staff members and peers. The award was created as part of the “Medical Professionalism Course” at the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, directed by Eugenio M. Rothe, M.D. which teaches medical students how to practice, “The Art of Medicine” and is named in memory of Dr. Robert Kemper, who exemplified the highest qualities of medical professionalism until his life was cut short by Cancer. In 2001, Bob and his wife, Rosa, opened their office in Key Biscayne and built a thriving practice and his commitment to family friends, patients, and the entire community of Key Biscayne was unwavering. Dr. Kemper exemplified all of the qualities that one would hope to find in their doctors.
