A Central Heights High School student recently placed in the Missouri Welding Institute’s annual welding competition.
Dylan Kimball finished sixth in the high school division. Thie annual two-day competition had more than 350 students from all over the Midwest compete for prizes, This was the second-largest turnout in the 11-year history of the competition in spite of COVID-19.
There were a total of 20 winners and they were awarded more than $410,000 in scholarships. Each participant received a $1,000 scholarship toward tuition at Missouri Welding Institute.

Ottawa University is beginning a search for a new university president and CEO.
Lucky DeFries, Ottawa University Board of Trustees chairman, announced the school is searching for someone to succeed Kevin Eichner, the school s current chancellor, effective this summer.
“We have been most fortunate to benefit from Kevin’s leadership over these past 12 years,” DeFries said. “This has been a period of unprecedented growth and progress at OU. While Kevin’s contract runs through July 1 of 2022, the board is beginning the search and succession process a year earlier to ensure that the new president will benefit from Kevin’s years of experience, contacts, and continued engagement in strategic initiatives prior to his full retirement in 2022.”

The Ottawa area is set to benefit from a portion of more than $2.1 million in grant funding that has been awarded to fuel All in for Kansas Kids, a program used by the Kansas Children’s Cabinet and Trust Fund for distributing money and resources for childcare and related services across the state.
Ottawa was among those that received a grant submitted by Child Care Aware of Eastern Kansas. Ottawa is working collaboratively with Child Care Aware of Eastern Kansas, Chanute and the Hi-Crest neighborhood of Topeka. Ottawa received over $22,000 to support existing providers to offer high-quality care for infants and toddlers and create 10 additional slots for children birth to age 3 during nontraditional hours.
Embracing aging classes available for seniors

Aging is a reality. Dealing with the aging process is not always easy.
The Frontier Extension District, Marais des Cygnes Extension District and Coffey County Extension are collaborating on a program called “Keys to Embracing Aging.” It is a free 12-part series designated to teach individuals health and safety behaviors that contribute to quality of life, overall well being and longevity.
The series runs Feb. 3 through July 7. The sessions will run every other Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
This will be a free program offered to people 60 and older and limited to 30 participants.

About 130 people participated in last week’s quiz.
Participants scored highest on a question about a lawsuit seeking to close a mining operation, with 92% of respondents correctly answering “King II mine.”
Participants scored lowest on a question about a Pine River Valley restaurant that closed, with only 58% of respondents correctly answering “Pura Vida Cafe.”
