Catherine of Aragon: The Spanish Queen of England

The Unsuccessful First Marriage of Catherine of Aragon In 1501, when Catherine and Arthur were 15 years old, the pair was married at the Old St Paul’s Cathedral and subsequently lived at Ludlow Castle in England. Six months after their marriage, Arthur died unexpectedly at just 15 years of age, leaving Catherine, who was now the Princess of Wales, a widow. This put the arrangement between England and Spain in jeopardy and so arrangements were hastily made to marry her to Arthur’s younger brother Henry VIII, who was five years younger. During this time, any woman married into high-status society was expected to have a dowry with her upon marriage. The dowry money would be given to the husband and his family to support the young couple. Often dowries were used as a type of bribery to have a woman married off to a rich and powerful family. Catherine was no different, and when she was married to Prince Arthur, her dowry was 200,000 ducat, a silver or gold coin used to trade.

Opinion | It s time for handicapped to retire | Opinion

The word “handicapped” is a word that comes with a lot of baggage. One common misconception is that the word “handicapped”  originated in 1504 after a war in England which left many veterans disabled. King Henry VII was unable to picture these disabled veterans holding a job or contributing to society. After King Henry VII came to this conclusion, he passed legislation that made it legal for disabled veterans to beg in the street. Now, disabled people could go out in the street with their “cap in hand” and beg for money, food and whatever else they needed to survive.  Despite the believability of this story, the term “handicapped” didn’t actually become used until the early 20th century during horse races. Before a race, the stronger horse would somehow be put at a disadvantage in an attempt to give the competitors equal circumstances. This is how the term became associated with “disadvantage,” and it didn’t take
