Not all questions can be answered with either ‘yes’ or ‘no.’ Complex realities don’t often offer such luxurious indulgences. This is true of people, it is true of nations. It is true whenever there are multiple factors in play. There are costs and there are benefits, always and therefore decisions are based on assessing marginal benefits and marginal costs. Sometimes, of course, one takes a principled stand, regardless of costs that may have to be incurred. Then there are situations where one determines not to be carried away by the moment but to think ahead. In other words, one wonders about repercussions, one wonders about precedents set.

Bombay Africans and Dr Livingstone’s Last Journey Exploring an explorer Lady Nyasa, though frail, surprisingly succeeded in making a very long journey from Zambezi to Bombay carrying Dr David Livingstone, the well known Scottish explorer to Africa. Nearly 178 years ago, Africa was called the Dark Continent by Europeans living in dark about the continent with little or no knowledge about its people or geography. Dr Livingstone is a live subject. Since his death on May 1 1873, hardly a week passes when something or the other about him is not being researched. In one such exploration I found his very brief connection with Mumbai, then Bombay.

Penlee lifeboat disaster December 19, 1981

People are being urged to remember the eight extremely brave, fearless and selfless lifeboatmen who lost their lives 39 years today. December 19, 1981 the Penlee Lifeboat Disaster saw the tragic loss of the crew of the Solomon Browne and of the coaster Union Star off the south Cornish coast near Mousehole. It was in hurricane force winds that the cargo ship Union Star was blown off course after it suffered steering and engine failure. The crew of the Solomon Browne The lifeboat Solomon Browne launched at 8.12pm in an attempt to rescue the eight crew from Union Star as it was about to hit the rocks.
