Everything that you need to know ahead of Saturday’s match:
(1) On Tuesday night, Manchester United ruthlessly punished shorthanded Southampton in a 9-0 rout. An early red card killed off whatever resistance the visitors might have been able to muster with Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s 18th minute goal officially opening the floodgates. Marcus Rashford, Edinson Cavani, Anthony Martial, Scott McTominay, Bruno Fernandes, and Daniel James all joined him on the scoresheet before the referee mercifully blew the full-time whistle.
(2) Most importantly, this result ballooned Manchester United’s goal difference to +19. In what’s shaping up to be a close Premier League title race, this could be important come season’s end.
Rio Ferdinand has responded to a Tweet from Times reporter Henry Winter on Everton defender Ben Godfrey with a big six-word claim – rating him among the best Under-23 defenders in European football.
Godfrey, 23, joined Everton in the summer after impressing for Norwich City last season – despite the Canaries being relegated. The Toffees splashed out £25million (BBC), and he has since starred for the Merseyside outfit.
Indeed, the £77,000-a-week (Spotrac) England Under-21 international has now clocked up 16 appearances in all competitions for Everton – playing in the middle of the defence, at right-back or even in place of Lucas Digne.
Winter was full of praise for Godfrey, following Everton’s 2-1 win over Leeds at Elland Road on Wednesday night. Ferdinand, an ambassador for the New Era agency which represents Godfrey, responded to Winter on Twitter.

It will save repetition further down the page as we reflect on British journalists collectively losing their sh t and losing sight of anything approaching perspective after the sacking of Frank Lampard. We can leave it to you to decide whether this is fuelled by xenophobia, self-interest at losing a media-friendly, talkative manager or simply a misplaced soft spot for a great footballer most have watched in awe for years, but here are the facts:
