Detroit public school students return to classroom after months of remote learning

DETROIT (WXYZ) â Thousands of Detroit public school students will return to the classroom Monday morning after months of remote learning.
The district suspended in-person learning in November due to infection rates spiking in Detroit.
Early on in the vaccine rollout, educators in Detroit were prioritized at TCF Center. Superintendent Nikolai Vitti said all Detroit teachers who wanted a vaccine have received one.
Vitti said face-to-face learning is necessary to ensure all students have equal access to learning.
In March and April of last year, something was gnawing at Dr Raed Al-Naser.
The pulmonologist and critical care physician at Sharp Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa, California, had been on the front lines of the pandemic from the very beginning. The Jordanian-American doctor quickly noticed he was treating a disproportionate number of Arab Americans suffering from Covid-19.
“It was a simple observation from doing my regular rounds. I see the patients are either ethnically Hispanic, Latinos or Middle Eastern. In our particular area, we have larger communities of people from Iraq, Syria and other countries in the region,” he said.
Vaccine distribution makes way to UCS staff

SHELBY TOWNSHIP/UTICA As Utica Community Schools continues to move toward more in-person instruction, district officials are organizing partnerships to increase the availability of vaccines to the Utica Community Schools staff.
Through partnerships with the Sterling Heights Fire Department and Henry Ford Medical Center, district staff have had another opportunity to register to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.
The district is also working with local pharmacies including Walgreens, CVS, Rite Aid, Meijer and Kroger to increase availability of vaccines for staff and has contacted the Macomb County Health Department to host in-district clinics.
The Utica Community Schools (UCS) district said it is “leveraging partnerships” to increase the availability of vaccines to its staff while it moves toward more in-person instruction amid the coronavirus pandemic.
