A lot has changed since NASCAR first visited Atlanta this spring. At the time, oddsmakers were still confident that the lack of productivity from the two drivers who dominated last year’s regular season was a fluke. Kevin Harvick was the favorite at +560 to open and +580 immediately ahead of the race.
Hamlin opened at +725 and enough money apparently exchanged hands at those odds that he closed at +675 before the Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
With a fourth-place finish on the 1.5-mile track of Homestead-Miami Speedway and a win at the similarly-configured Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Kyle Larson was only beginning to get the respect he deserved and was listed as the second favorite at +625.
Did You Notice?: 6 NASCAR Storylines to Follow With 6 Regular Season Races Left
Did You Notice? … There’s six races left in the NASCAR Cup Series regular season?
After some incredible parity, with 10 different winners in the first 11 races, the 2021 playoff battle has mostly sorted itself out. We’ve had just one new winner in the last nine races as Cinderellas have been replaced by the typical country club up front. Recent hot streaks by both Hendrick Motorsports and Joe Gibbs Racing make it within the realm of possibility those multi-car giants could put six, maybe even seven drivers combined in the Round of 8.

Three road course races in five weekends changed the complexion of the season, not only for the Hendrick Motorsports drivers who swept them and gathered momentum, but also because it causes the rest of the field to shift their focus and find a different balance than they’ve had any season previous to 2021.
For any moderately capable driver and team, road courses allow them to control their fate to a degree we are not currently seeing on unrestricted, intermediate speedways and certainly not plate tracks. That is even truer for the dark horse teams that found their way into the top 10 at Road America. Kurt Busch, Matt DiBenedetto, Chase Briscoe, and Ross Chastain needed those runs to gain momentum for the final run to the playoffs. It could be the difference between being in the top 16 or outside that mark when the final 10 races roll around.
